Lexington’s Veterans Affairs Healthcare is holding a town hall meeting Thursday for women vets at the Leestown Road, or Sousley Complex. It’s called “Be the Beat: A Focus on Heart Health.” The VA’s Becky Schlueter said registered dietician Erin Casey will make one of the presentations.
“She is going to be showcasing some chicken and black bean wraps. The focus is on heart health. So it's always about what we can add versus taking away, so there'll be some beans and veggies, you know, whole wheat wraps.”
The town hall will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Sousley auditorium. Schlueter said all women veterans are invited, even those who aren’t enrolled in the VA system. She said the VA has a partnership with the American Heart Association and its annual “Heart Health Month” campaign.
‘This year, the focus is encouraging people to learn hands-on CPR instructions and informing women veterans about cardiovascular disease, specifically in women, how to prevent it.”
Schlueter said women are less likely than men to receive CPR from bystanders. Thursday’s presentations will include healthy cooking tips – and Schlueter said male vets are welcome, too.
