Lexington sports wager expert says get plenty of data before making a bet

Legal sports wagering has been a part of the Kentucky scene now for just over two months. A sports betting aficionado says it can pay to know what you’re doing.

Lexington Sports Talk Radio Host Brad Taylor used the words “marathon” and “grind” to describe what it takes to be successful in sports wagering. Taylor offered his insights to Lexington Rotarians Thursday. He said to trust the data in the desert, referring to oddsmakers in Las Vegas.

“It’s all about money management. Being able to manage your money is more important than picking winners as crazy is that is to sound. Because, like I said, we can’t get 60% winners. I shoot for 53%,” said Taylor

Taylor said it’s important to cut emotional ties to teams when participating in sports wagering. And Taylor, who grew up in Madison County, noted he works at sports betting 361 days a year. One piece of advice he offered was don’t fall victim to too much parlay gambling.

Taylor added the Las Vegas experts know pertinent sport-related information before the public does in many cases.

“The desert knows. The oddsmakers know because there’s money on the line. And if we go in there and think, hey we could do this. We’re smarter than they are. No, we’re not. They know exactly what they are doing. There’s a lot of money on the line in these games, especially in a big conference like the SEC,” said Taylor.

Following his speech, Taylor said football is king when it comes to sports wagering. He noted there will likely be a lull after the NCAA basketball tournament, but then crank up again next August. Taylor said there will be more people who get in trouble with gambling problems. He added it can be another addiction if you allow it to be.
