Lexington's 'Water Week' designed to remind people of importance of healthy bodies of water

The City of Lexington’s annual Water Week is under way and runs through Saturday. More than 20 events are scheduled, including hikes, litter cleanups, watershed walks and more. Jennifer Myatt is an environmental initiatives specialist with the city. She said Lexington is unique for a city its size, because there’s not a big water body running through the middle of it. Instead, it was built around Town Branch Creek.

“We are a city that has a lot of creeks that run through our community. And like so many of the schools and so many people live somewhere where they have a creek in their backyard or creek behind their school or they live close to a park with a creek.”

Myatt said there’ll be several creek walks that will allow folks young and old to learn about their importance and have fun at the same time.

“You get to see the crayfish and all of the little bugs and they talk about why they're important for the waters health and why they're so important for the environment and how they can show us if the creek is healthy or if the creek needs some help from us to be a little bit more clean.”
