Lexington's new vice mayor makes history with his election to the City Council

Lexington next vice mayor will make history when he takes his seat on the 15-member urban county council.

Dan Wu said his campaign was truly grassroots through and through.

The chef and entrepreneur will be the first Asian-American to serve on the central Kentucky community’s governing body. And as the leading vote getter in the council-at-large race, Wu takes on the responsibility of vice mayor.

“Being the next vice mayor is a huge responsibility. It is definitely intimidating. There’s going to be steep learning curve, but I am up to the job. I have faced big challenges before,” said Wu.

Wu said, if his reading of the election results is correct, come January the Council will have the most women and people of color along with the first Asian American and African American at-large members.

“I think that is great, not only from a representation standpoint because we all come from different lived experiences and those are truly truly important, if we want to really represent the city we live in,” said Wu.

Wu said he sees the vice mayor position as a leadership role that can be harnessed to make some positive changes in Lexington. Wu will be working with Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton who won re-election last night, earning more than 70% of the vote in her race.
