The City of Lexington has an ambitious goal for the annual “Reforest the Bluegrass” for next Saturday, April 15: to plant 5-thousand trees. This year’s planting will take place at Hisle Park, on Lexington’s north side. Jennifer Myatt, an environmental initiative specialist for the city, said the volunteer-driven program’s been around for more than two decades.
“Reforest the Bluegrass has been going on since 1999. And it's an effort to get our residents out our citizens out to come help plant trees with us, we plant seedlings, and we make sure that the trees are all native trees.”
Environmental experts say planting trees improves air and water quality, not to mention adding shade in the summer.
“We plant a variety of trees because our goal is for the trees to survive and become streamside buffers which help with water pollution and of course, they help with air quality. The more we expand our tree canopy the, better it is for our environment.”
Reforesting the Bluegrass begins at 9 a.m. next Saturday at Lexington’s Hisle Park. Breakfast, lunch and a free t-shirt will be provided.
