Monday afternoon at the Dunbar Community Center, Lexington’s Parks and Recreation Department kicks off a series of events for Black History Month. Paul Hooper is Parks and Rec’s information office supervisor. He said the African beaded jewelry making lesson – like the seven other gatherings this month – is free and open to everyone.
“So it's going to be an opportunity for people of all ages, families, you know, friends, kids to come in, learn a little bit about the history of that and then make their own jewelry and have something to walk away with.”
The African beaded jewelry making lesson runs from 4 to 6 Monday afternoon. Hooper said many of Parks and Rec’s Black History Month events take place at places named for prominent African Americans.
“We've got William Wells Brown Community Center, obviously named after William Wallace Brown, and artwork at the Carver School named after Carver. And, you know, we've got Dunbar Community Center after Paul Laurence Dunbar.”
Dunbar Community Center, which began as a school for Black high school students, celebrated its 100th anniversary last year.
