The City of Lexington broke ground Wednesday at a new 138-acre park on the west side of town called Cardinal Run North. It’s off Parkers Mill Road – across from the 55-acre Cardinal Run South, which opened in 2002. Mayor Linda Gorton said the land for both parks was donated in 1997.
“At Cardinal Run North, Lexington will soon be able to enjoy two miles of natural hiking trails, six pickleball courts, a basketball court for youth multipurpose fields.”
Gorton said the park will also have a large playground, a dog park with two paddocks, a mile-long paved shared use trail and two picnic shelters. Twelfth District Councilmember Kathy Plomin said Lexingtonians’ suggestions made a difference.
“I remember attending some of the public input sessions on this. And it was really fun to watch constituents and other folks or requests really, the whole county come in and talk about their ideas.
The park will open next year and be paid for with $10.1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds.
