The discussion about a youth sports complex in Lexington continues at City Hall. This week, the Council approved $1 million dollars toward infrastructure for such a facility. The vote was close, coming in at 8-to-7. In recent months there has been private sector interest in youth soccer fields and a pro soccer stadium. Council Member Susan Lamb voted no on the item Tuesday.
“I know it says infrastructure. We don’t have a site yet and so I’m trying to wrap my head around what would the million dollars be used for,” said Lamb.
Council Members Preston Worley and Josh McCurn both responded and said it would demonstrate city commitment to a youth sports center. In addition to soccer, Worley said such a facility could feature baseball, lacrosse, and football. McCurn said approval sends a message to the private sector.
“We have someone who’s willing to put their money forward. I think this is a good chance to put our money where our mouth is and not just say hey we want to do something, but actually saying we want to put that investment forward. And help out the private sector and have a good public-private partnership,” said McCurn.
Meanwhile, the Board of Adjustments in September approved a privately funded plan for ten youth soccer fields off Athens- Boonesboro Road. No firm decision on a soccer stadium site has been made.
