Lewisham incident LIVE: Armed police lock down London high street in stand-off with knifeman

Armed police have closed Lewisham High Street amid a stand-off with a man seen waving a knife out of a window.

Pictures were posted on social media of a man in a dressing gown brandishing the weapon on Monday.

Met officers were called to the scene at 10.45am on Monday and are speaking to the man. They remain in place after a stand-off lasting hours.

The force are working to find out whether anyone else is in the flat - but say “there is no information available at this time to suggest there is anyone else inside the property”

The High Street remains closed while the police, ambulance and fire services are at the scene.

Updated police statement as incident 'ongoing'

The Metropolitan Police has said “there is no information available at this time to suggest there is anyone else inside the property” in an updated statement.

It confirmed the incident was ongoing and they remain on scene alongside London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

In the statement shared with the Standard shortly before 6.45pm, the Met said: “Police were called to a disturbance on Lewisham High Street, at around 10:45hrs on Monday, 10 February.

“Officers are currently in attendance at the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

“We are speaking to a man inside a residential address at the location. There is no information available at this time to suggest there is anyone else inside the property.

“Lewisham High Street section of the A20 remains closed while the incident is ongoing.”

Passersby says man was 'waving large knife' out of third floor window

A passer-by, Callum Fahim, has told the BBC that he saw a man leaning out of a third-floor window and waving a large knife around.

"There are two armed police officers with a gun aimed at him, and they've been like that for a long time now,” he told the broadcaster.

"I can't see any signs of any negotiations or anything taking place. There's fire engines, police and ambulance.

"And now some police horses have turned up."

Local shop owner says cordon has 'ruined business'

A staff member at Lewisham Food and Wine, close to the cordon said: "It's ruined business, the road has been closed all day.

“I don't know what's happening but the cordon has been up all day."

Residents left 'shocked' after incident

A woman who was trying to go to Halifax Bank before being stopped by police at the cordon said: "I don't know what's happening. I came to do my shopping and then I saw this. It's pretty shocking."

High Street 'closed off for two hours'

Our reporter Josh Salisbury is at the scene in Lewisham speaking to local residents.

A local business owner, who did not want to give his name, said: "I'm not sure what's happening.

“It's been closed off for the last two hours, police aren't telling us anything."

Traffic warning for Lewisham

Police have warned of heavy traffic near Lewisham High Street due to the ongoing police incident.

Lewisham MPS said: “Due to an ongoing incident in Lewisham High Street towards Lee High Road, traffic will be diverted and may be heavier than usual.

"Please plan your journey accordingly."

London Fire Brigade at the scene

The London Fire Brigade are also at the scene.

A spokesperson said: “London Fire Brigade are responding alongside the Metropolitan Police Service to a police incident on Lewisham High Street.

“The Brigade was called about the incident at 10.56am, and crews remain on scene.”

Armed police have been called to a “disturbance” on Lewisham High Street.

A spokesperson for the Met said: “Officers are currently in attendance at the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

"We are speaking to a man inside an address at the location. Enquiries are ongoing to establish whether anyone else is inside the property.

"Lewisham High Street section of the A20 remains closed while the incident is ongoing."

Lewisham MPS added on X: "We are aware of social media reports about an incident in Lewisham High Street.

"Officers are currently in attendance at a residential address at the location speaking to a man inside the property."
