Lewisham man charged for flying £2m cocaine haul into Essex airfield

A Lewisham man is among two charged after £2m worth of cocaine was found hidden in a plane that landed in Essex.

More than 30kg of cocaine was found hidden beneath a seat on a plane that flew from France to an airfield near Epping on Thursday evening.

Errol Weirfrom, 49, from Lewisham and Anastasios Balian, 52, from Cheshunt, were due to appear in court yesterday charged with the importation of class A drugs.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “Border Force seized and prevented 30kg of cocaine from causing harm on our streets, and are fully committed to disrupt the criminal networks behind this trade.

"We continue to work closely with law enforcement partners, including the NCA, to keep our borders secure.”

NCA branch operations manager Paul Orchard said the Boarder Force is “determined” to protect the public and that this seizure was significant in denying criminals profits.

These arrests were made as part of a National Crime Agency investigation.
