Lewis Hamilton torn into by F1 fans for wearing pink 'tea cosy' balaclava at Belgian GP

Lewis Hamilton was torn into by F1 fans for his latest fashion statement at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Mercedes man endured a difficult weekend at Spa, struggling for pace in both practice and qualifying - although began Sunday's race in fourth after a host of other drivers received grid penalties. However, any hopes of a sixth successive podium finish were scuppered on the opening lap when he collided with Fernando Alonso.

The incident ended Hamilton's race, with his old rival later branding the British driver an "idiot" for his role in the crash. Alonso himself managed to escape unscathed, and finished fifth in a race won by Max Verstappen.

But arguably, the race track didn't represent Hamilton's biggest error of judgement on the weekend. He arrived at the circuit on Saturday wearing what looked like a cross between a knitted pink tea cosy and a balaclava.

The striking headwear came decorated with daisies, with only Hamilton's nose and eyes visible. To complete the outfit, he also donned a purple cardigan, long sleeved top specially designed cargo pants, and white trainers.

And on social media, F1 fans vented their feelings, with @S829MLY joking: "Me nan wants her tea cosy back," while @8east9 added: "Look at this guy. There is no reason for anyone, anywhere to wear something like this."

@RyoGazuki joked: "Never trust a man who, when left alone in the room with a tea cosy, doesn't try it on," while @MattRed5 said: "Why is it when people get rich, they just wear nonsense?"

@brook_f1 meanwhile, opted to mock the porpoising issue which has evidently affected the pace of the Silver Arrows throughout the 2022 campaign: "His straight-line speed must be off the charts cause I can't defend this," he posted.

Hamilton, 37, has never been afraid to turn up at races in flamboyant clothes. Indeed, ahead of Sunday's race, he rocked up dressed completely in bright red clothing, with a waistcoat accompanying his matching trousers and t-shirt.
