Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has expressed his support for Susie Wolff, who has taken legal action against the FIA, the sport's governing body. Wolff, the director of the all-female junior racing series F1 Academy and wife of Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, filed a criminal complaint in French courts regarding statements made against her by the FIA.
Last December, the FIA conducted an investigation into the Wolffs following allegations of sharing confidential information and a conflict of interest. However, the investigation was closed within 48 hours after other teams denied lodging the required complaint. Susie Wolff initiated legal proceedings on March 4.
Hamilton commended Wolff's courage and values, highlighting the lack of accountability and transparency within the sport. He emphasized the importance of Wolff's actions in a male-dominated environment, where speaking out can often lead to repercussions.
Regarding FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Hamilton expressed a lack of confidence, citing reported complaints of interference. The FIA's ethics committee cleared Ben Sulayem of any wrongdoing, including allegations of overturning penalties and influencing circuit certifications.
On the racing front, Hamilton remains optimistic about Mercedes' performance this season, aiming to challenge for podium finishes and victories. The seven-time world champion last won a race at the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP and is a two-time winner of the Australian GP.
Hamilton's support for Wolff's legal action underscores the ongoing issues of accountability and inclusivity within Formula 1, as the sport continues to navigate challenges both on and off the track.
