Lewis Hamilton's Uncertainty Revealed In Drive To Survive Documentary

Lewis Hamilton British race car driver

Lewis Hamilton's uncertainty over remaining with Mercedes for the rest of his career was highlighted in a conversation with team principal Toto Wolff during the 2023 Formula 1 season, as revealed in the latest season of Netflix's Drive to Survive.

The documentary showcased Hamilton's contemplation of his future with the team amidst a disappointing season for Mercedes. Despite signing a contract extension in August that was supposed to keep him with Mercedes until the end of 2025, Hamilton surprised many by activating a break clause to join Ferrari for the 2025 season.

The behind-the-scenes footage shed light on the mindset of the seven-time world champion, who seemed to have reservations about staying with the Silver Arrows. In the conversation, Hamilton expressed concerns about Mercedes' performance, while Wolff tried to persuade him to stay with the team for the remainder of his driving career.

Wolff referenced Aston Martin's progress over the winter as an example of what Mercedes could achieve with the right car concept, aero, and balance. Hamilton, however, indicated a sense of urgency, stating that he did not want to wait until 2026 for new engine regulations.

Hamilton's response, 'Frick, me neither. You can be here for like 20 more years, 30 more years, I can't,' hinted at his desire for a more immediate impact. Wolff reassured Hamilton of his value beyond being a racing driver, emphasizing his leadership role within the team.

As Hamilton prepares for his final season with Mercedes, he is scheduled to make his 2024 pre-season testing debut following his teammate George Russell's drive. The upcoming season opener, the Bahrain Grand Prix, is set to kick off shortly after testing, with unique scheduling due to the Ramadan period.

Formula 1 fans can catch all the drama and action of the 2024 season on Netflix's Drive to Survive, with all episodes available for streaming. Sky customers can access Netflix through various platforms, ensuring they don't miss a moment of the thrilling F1 action.
