And today, he's looking to make history again as he chases his eighth world crown – an unmatched total - at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The 36-year-old is never too far away from the headlines, but it's not just his sporting successes that keeps him in the spotlight with his net worth and relationship history also a hot topics.
Since his high-profile split with Nicole Scherzinger, Hamilton has been linked with a number of partners, including famous singers and models.
In a 2019 interview he admitted it was hard to hold down a relation with his career.
He said: “It may be slightly different in that we are travelling as much as we are, and you are just away for crazy amounts of time.

Jodie Mia met the F1 champion when they studied at the Cambridge School of Arts and Science and were together for four years.
Hamilton was then establishing himself as a sports star and Jodie now lives in Hong Kong, where she is a restaurant receptionist.
Lotta Hintsa - 2006
Hamilton was rumoured to have previously been dating Lotta Hintsa, who is the daughter of one of his former F1 mentors, Aki Hintsa.
Lotta confirmed that she was a friend of Lewis, but claimed that they were never dating at any point.
Vivian Burkhardt - 2008
Vivian Burkhardt caught Hamilton’s attention after she was crowned Miss World in 2007, where she represented Grenada.
However, they only dated for a few months, but were seen attending a few events together.
Nicole Scherzinger - 2007 to 2015
Hamilton and Scherzinger were one of the hottest power celebrity couples for eight years. The sporting and entertainment commitments of the pair put a strain on their long distance relationship and they eventually split in 2015.

Rihanna and the F1 ace have been friends for many years, but a few years ago it was rumoured the pair were looking to take their relationship to the next level.
They spent time together in New York during Summer 2015, but a romance was never confirmed by either party.
Rita Ora - 2016
It seems as though he has a liking for X Factor judges as he was also linked to singer Rita Ora.
They never confirmed a relationship but were pictured together on numerous occasions, which sent rumours flying.
The pair were said to have enjoyed a holiday together during 2016, before she was his special guest at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November, the lavish F1 season finale event.
Barbara Palvin - 2016
Hamilton was close to Hungarian model Barbara Palvin during the late summer of 2016.
They met at the Cannes Film Festival and she went on to be by his side as he drove in the European, Hungarian and Monaco Grands Prix during the season.
Kendall Jenner - 2016
He has also been linked to the Kardashian clan after he was spotted with Kendall in Cannes and Monaco.
Winnie Harlow - 2016-2017
Hamilton was first pictured with model Winnie Harlow, one of fashion’s most successful models, when they both attended the GQ Awards in September 2016.
They were again snapped together at the amfAR Gala in Cannes in May 2017.
Sofia Richie - 2017
It was claimed that Hamilton was briefly dating Sofia Richie, the daughter of singer Lionel, at the start of 2017.
They were first seen on the front row alongside one another at the Couture Fashion Week in Paris, before he reportedly took her for a lunch date a few months later.
Sofia went on to date Kourtney Kardashian's baby daddy, Scott Disick.
Nicki Minaj - 2018
Nicki Minaj and Hamilton were rumoured to have hooked up in the summer of 2018.
They were first pictured together at New York Fashion Week and shared snaps on social media alongside one another, including from a getaway in Dubai which sent fans wild.
Veronica Valle - 2015
She dating the racing star for three months in 2015, but later hit out at how he spoke to her.
She claims he critiqued her appearance and shamed her for using the bathroom.
Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, she says: "Throughout the whole trip he was so ugly to me.
She claims he also belittled her golden tan, saying: "Wow, you are so bright you look like a damn Oompa Loompa".
Several months later, on a separate occasion, he's also said to have criticised her for using the 'wrong' bathroom.
Zahra Elise - 2019
Hamilton was linked to the model and business woman back in 2019 after they were spotted together at a pal's birthday.
As well as boasting more than a million social media followers, she has her own lingerie line and she used to serve in the US Navy as a jet mechanic.
However she later stressed they were just friends.
Florence Mueller - 2020
Most recently, Hamilton was linked to Florence Mueller last year after they went on a yachting holiday together.
Sources stressed they weren't a couple, but added that there was nothing romantic "at the moment".
An insider told The Sun: “Lewis and Florence aren’t dating, they’re just good mates.
“She joined him on the boat as part of a group of pals with Lewis.
“They get on but there’s nothing romantic going on between them at the moment.”
