Lewis Hamilton ’s future still remains in the balance ahead of the 2022 season, as Formula 1 and FIA chiefs remain undecided over the fate of Michael Masi.
Hamilton was left heartbroken at last month’s 2021 season finale in Abu Dhabi, as he was pipped to a record eighth title by arch rival Max Verstappen on the very final lap of the season.
Verstappen’s victory was no doubt a controversial one though, as he took advantage of a contentious call by Masi after the FIA director ordered a number of lapped cars between leader Hamilton and the Dutchman to overtake a safety car.
This meant the Englishman’s once comfortable lead was wiped out following Masi’s decision, allowing Verstappen to get almost side-by-side with Hamilton on the final lap.
The pair were left to play out a one-lap shootout to decide the world championship, and of course it was the Red Bull racer who prevailed for his maiden title.
This has reportedly left Hamilton questioning his love for the sport following the dramatic controversy, and his silence since the race has led many to think he may not return for 2022.
One aspect that could be central to the Englishman’s decision is the fate of Masi, after Mercedes agreed to drop their appeal against the result of the Abu Dhabi race in return for the sacking of the FIA director.

According to a report from the Mail , F1 chiefs sat through a one-hour meeting on Tuesday to discuss the controversies of the 2021 season finale - and the future of Masi.
Whilst a number of senior figures believe the Australian can remain in his role, alongside an experienced support team around him, a concrete decision still remains unclear.
A statement from the FIA last week revealed that discussions would take place about possible changes to ruling for the ‘F1 structure’ - with the deployment of the safety car mentioned.
However the ‘outcome of the detailed analysis’ will not be announced until 18 March, just two days before the upcoming season begins.
Of course a decision on Hamilton’s future will have to be made by then, and McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes the seven-time world champion will be back behind the wheel come March.
He said: “I wouldn’t be shocked if Lewis stopped, but I think he’ll be back. He’s at the top of his game. I doubt he is ready to hang up his helmet.”
