Lewis Hamilton and F1 pay respects to the Queen with mark of respect at Italian GP

A minute's silence was held before first practice at the Italian Grand Prix, as the Formula 1 paddock paid its respects to the Queen.

News of the monarch's death on Thursday let to an outpouring of emotion from the motorsport world. While this weekend's action will still go ahead, it was soon revealed that plans had been put into place for F1 to pay tribute.

Before the first practice session at Monza on Friday afternoon, the drivers, team bosses and pit crews lined up in the paddock. Lewis Hamilton was visibly emotional as his thoughts were with the Queen, who he had met on several occasions and spoken highly of in the past, as he lined up with George Russell, F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem.

Earlier in the day, he had taken to social media to publish a personal message to the monarch. "How do you find the words to describe the loss of Her Majesty The Queen? She was truly an iconic leader, an inspiration and a reassuring presence for most, if not all, of our lives," he wrote.

"Since the sad news yesterday, I've been reflecting on her incredible life. She was a symbol of hope for so many and she served her country with dignity, dedication and kindness. She was truly like no other and I'm grateful to have lived during her time. Her legacy will be long-lasting and her passing deeply felt.

"I had the incredible honour of being able to spend time with her. It is something I'll never forget. We talked about our shared love of dogs and she was incredibly generous with her time. I know the whole nation and many others around the world will be mourning her loss and my thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those close to her, who have lost a loved one. Rest in Peace."

Before it was confirmed that the weekend's action would be going ahead, Domenicali said: "Formula 1 mourns the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. For more than seven decades she dedicated her life to public service with dignity and devotion and inspired so many around the world.

"Formula 1 sends its deepest condolences to the Royal Family and to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth." Another minute's silence is planned on Sunday, before the start of the race.

Domenicali later added: "We are going to do a minute of silence with all the drivers, with everyone in the pitlane as a sign of respect because I think that is the nature of our sport. Respect. Going ahead and also knowing her contribution to the development of the sport. Thanks to Her Majesty and a lot of respect. Condolences to the Royal Family."
