Lewis Ferguson transfer endorsement as Rangers and Celtic warned by uncle Barry in pointed John McGinn reminder

Bemused Barry Ferguson admits he is surprised Rangers or Celtic haven't made an approach to Aberdeen for his nephew Lewis so far this summer.

The Scotland cap has been linked with a move away from the Granite City since last summer with Watford, Fulham and Cagliari all said to be keen on the 22-year-old. Millwall are reportedly leading the race for a deal this summer, with Gary Rowett looking for the midfielder as a replacement for Luke Freeman who returned to Sheffield United on the expiry of his loan, while Sheyi Ojo went back to Liverpool.

However, the Scottish Premiership champions and Europa League finalists have been two notable absentees from the list of potential suitors for the Dons' star. Former Ibrox captain Barry reckons Lewis could follow the same path as Aaron Hickey and John McGinn to success - and warned the Glasgow giants they could be missing out on a rising star.

When speaking about Rangers and Celtic missing out on players, Ferguson told The Go Radio Football Show: “The one that jumps to mind is John McGinn to Celtic. That’s the one that jumps out, Celtic wouldn’t go to the £3.5million, Aston Villa did and now they have got a £40-£50m player on their hands. It’s similar to (Aaron) Hickey.

“You are surprised Rangers or Celtic don’t go and try and sign them. It’s proven that they go to Serie A or England and do it at the highest level.

“You have my young nephew Lewis who is being linked with clubs in Italy and England. I don’t know what that fee is, but I think these players have the potential to play at an Old Firm club.

“I believe that for his development that he needs to go and play at a higher level. No disrespect to Aberdeen, Aberdeen have been really good for Lewis, as have Hamilton Accies, for giving him the platform.

"But I do believe he is at the stage in his career where he needs to go and make that next step, whether that is at a Rangers, a Celtic, down south or in Italy.”
