Scotland international Lewis Ferguson has been ruled out for three weeks after sustaining a thigh strain during the warm-up ahead of Bologna’s Serie A clash with Napoli on Monday night.
The 25-year-old midfielder was initially named in the starting line-up to face Antonio Conte’s side, whose squad includes Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour, but was forced to withdraw moments before kick-off after picking up the injury.
Tests carried out by the club have since confirmed a strain in his right thigh, sidelining him for the crucial run of matches in the coming weeks.
Ferguson, who has worn the captain’s armband for Bologna this season and emerged as one of their standout performers, will now begin a short rehabilitation process.

If his recovery progresses as planned, he is expected to make his return on May 4 when Bologna travel to face Juventus in a high-stakes encounter as they battle for a UEFA Champions League spot.
A medical team update read: "The tests that Lukasz Skorupski and Lewis Ferguson underwent revealed respectively: a low-grade lesion of the right adductor, and a low-grade lesion of the right rectus femoris.
"Recovery times for both are three weeks."
This latest setback is particularly cruel given Ferguson has been plagued with injury issues over the past year, and missed Euro 2024 due to injury, denying him the chance to represent his country on the biggest stage.
With a Copa Italia final appearance with Bologna potentially on the horizon next month, Ferguson will be hopeful he returns to full fitness swiftly and avoids a repeat heartbreak of missing a major career moment.
