Lewis Capaldi gets such severe panic attacks he has to sleep in same bed as his mum

Lewis Capaldi has revealed he suffers from such brutal panic attacks that his mum has to sleep in his bed with him.

The Scots singer opened up on how his rise to fame had a huge impact on his mental health and said his mum helps him deal with his hypochondria and anxiety.

The 25 year old said things got so bad that he once convinced himself he had a brain tumour and had to cancel a gig in America to go for a private MRI scan because of his fears.

Talking on Steven Bartlett’s podcast The Diary of a CEO, Lewis also spoke of a crippling anxiety attack he faced at the 2020 Grammy Awards - and how his mum Carol has had to sleep beside him to comfort him as recently as last month.

The Bathgate-born musician said: “If I'm having a panic attack there's nobody else that can help me out of it except my mum, for sure.

"My mum has had to sleep in my bed as recently as a month ago because of how bad my anxiety got at one point. But that was alcohol related to be honest, I had been on a bit of a bender."

Lewis, who recently revealed he suffers from Tourettes, explained he’s had therapy to deal with his anxiety and he now thinks it roots from childhood issues.

He said: “I have really bad anxiety. It never really reached a tipping point until after getting famous, I never had a panic attack until after I was famous, or after I was a musician or after I got to a height. The hypochondria, I guess looking back, I was such an anxious kid, but now because I understand it a lot more with therapy and I speak about it a lot more with people and try to learn more about it, I look back at it and think the behaviour was a result of anxiety.

“I would be walking around school moping, with blinkers on, because I was so convinced that I was going to die or I had this horrible disease or I was going to have to go to hospital, pass out or have a seizure - none of that has ever happened to me.”

Lewis, who dropped new single 'Forget Me' this week, went on to remember the time he was so convinced that he had a brain tumour that he cancelled a gig and paid to go for a private MRI scan instead.

He added: "I thought I had a brain tumour and I was worrying about it so much and getting so anxious that I was dizzy, that would then feed back into the 'oh I'm dizzy so I must have a brain tumour. Why else would I be dizzy?

"It even got so bad a couple of years ago that I went and paid for a MRI scan, I was meant to play Austin City Limits music festival in Austin and I just had to cancel the trip. it got so bad that I was like ‘I cannot get on a plane and go to Austin'. So I went and got the MRI and obviously I was fine. It was all in my head.

"It gets to the point where I can't imagine it not being something life-threatening or super serious."

He then went on to say he finds it easier to talk himself out these kind of situations now with the help of therapy and he’s learning to manage his conditions.. He added: “The hypochondria has lessened as I've gotten older.”
