In the summer of 1975, Johnnie Walker introduced me to the music of Bruce Springsteen by repeatedly playing the title track of the Born to Run album on his Radio 1 show.

This persuaded me to buy the album, and I wrote to tell Johnnie how much I enjoyed it, mentioning that my favourite track was Thunder Road.

To my surprise, Johnnie read out my letter on air and, although not a request show, he then played Thunder Road in its entirety, for probably the first time on national radio. He cared about the music, and listened to his listeners.

Johnnie Walker, a wonderful and fearless broadcaster, and his wife, Tiggy, used their experience of caring for each other during various illnesses to become forceful advocates on behalf of unpaid carers.
