Nicholas Stadlen was a committed supporter from its early days of Amnesty International, where my husband and I met him. Apartheid was within Amnesty International’s focus as one of the outstanding human rights causes of our generation and his, so it was not unexpected for Nick later to devote so much time and energy to South Africa. As well as making his splendid film, he spoke movingly at Joel Joffe’s memorial in London and organised a visit by the South African judge Albie Sachs.
