As a medical registrar, I worked with Dr Richard Taylor when he was senior medical registrar at Westminster hospital in 1971-72. He was a memorable role model in his unfailing kindness to his patients and courtesy to his colleagues.
He told me that subsequent to his consultant appointment he had moved as close as possible to Kidderminster hospital to ensure his availability. Following his tenure as an independent MP, he opposed Andrew Lansley’s NHS reforms in 2012 and stood as a candidate for the presidency of the Royal College of Physicians.
He exemplified the best characteristics of both physician and medical politician.
