Desmond Miller was an unsung hero of the counterculture revolution as it made itself felt in Yorkshire in the early 1970s. Without Des the Leeds Other Paper and the Sheffield Anarchist would not have seen the light of day.
He and I drove down to London from Leeds to collect a secondhand printing press. Not only was he one of the few people in the mainly student co-op who could drive, but he actually knew how the printing press worked – something most of the rest of us did not have a clue about.
Though he moved on to Norfolk in 1983, his printing skills, practical knowledge and good work contributed to the Leeds Other Paper surviving into the 90s.
