Lethlean to succeed Finnis as Saints CEO

Five years after resigning from the AFL in disgrace, Simon Lethlean is to succeed Matt Finnis as St Kilda chief executive.

The Saints announced on Thursday that Lethlean would take over from Finnis at the end of the season.

Lethlean and fellow executive Richard Simkiss resigned from the league in July 2017 because of what the AFL called inappropriate relationships with younger women working in the industry.

It came only five months after Lethlean, a shooting star in head office, had taken over the key role of AFL football operations manager.

Lethlean then was linked to roles at several other clubs before he joined the Saints as their football department boss in December, 2017.

He later became their chief operating officer.

Club president Andrew Bassatt said the Saints had started planning for Lethlean to take over from Finnis "some time ago".

He added the board unaminously approved the handover.

"In Simon, we are extremely fortunate to have an incoming CEO who understands our club and shares our ambitious aspirations for St Kilda," Bassatt said.

"Simon brings an unrivalled depth of experience and knowledge of all aspects of the industry - football, broadcasting, legal and game development.

"Since joining the club, he has won the trust and confidence of our people, attracted talented staff to our organisation and contributed significantly to our growth agenda."

Finnis was the AFL Players Association chief executive before taking the role at St Kilda in 2014.

He oversaw the end of the Saints' unsuccessful tenure at Seaford and the return to their Moorabbin home.

Along with a redeveloped headquarters, the club opened the Danny Frawley Centre this month.

But the club dropped out of the top eight last season and there is growing pressure on the St Kilda adminstration from fans for sustained on-field success.

The Saints said in a statement Finnis was keen to move on at the end of the year.

"St Kilda owes Matt an enormous debt of gratitude for the leadership he has provided our club to date and the changes he has made will be long-lasting," Bassat said.

"Suffice to say, when he joined the Saints back in 2014 we faced numerous challenges and the club he leaves at the end of 2022 will in many respects be unrecognisable from that time.

"Bringing the Club home to our heartland in Moorabbin, closing in on a membership target of 60,000 members, club record sponsorship revenue, and most recently securing and launching the Danny Frawley Centre for Health and Wellbeing, has helped to establish foundations from which our club can look ahead to a very bright future."

Lethlean said he is "incredibly optimistic" about St Kilda's prospects.

"Our supporters should know that I'll be leaving no stone unturned in our mission to deliver the success they are rightly impatient to enjoy," he said.
