Les Misérables announces Sunderland run in a first for the musical hit

Musical favourite Les Misérables is to come to Sunderland for the first time, it has been announced.

The big-scale Cameron Mackintosh show will have a near three-week run at Sunderland Empire later this year and tickets will go on sale next week.

The production, created by Mackintosh in 2009 to celebrate the show's 25-year anniversary, has proved a worldwide hit, seen by around 130 million people over the years.

Its North East run is being seen as a coup for the city theatre where it play out from November 1-19.

Packed with classic songs such as I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own and Bring Him Home, the stirring freedom-fighting story, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, is expected to be in huge demand from local musical fans.

Other standout hits include Stars and Do You Hear the People Sing? and the story is also brought to life with new material and designs.

Tickets for its run at Sunderland Empire will go on sale on February 21, firstly to ATG Theatre Card holders at 10am and groups at noon and then on general release to the public the next day, February 22, at 10am.
