Les Ferdinand's transfer deadline day tip off after Steve Bruce signing wanted out at Newcastle

Les Ferdinand played a crucial role in Jeff Hendrick's move to QPR after the Newcastle United great was alerted to the midfielder's availability in his role as the club's technical director.

Hendrick looked set to be left out of Newcastle's 25-man squad after the Magpies completed the big-money signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon on Sunday.

Eddie Howe was keen to be 'fair' and give the Ireland international the chance to go out on loan on deadline day.

Although some of the club's fringe players have ultimately decided to stay put, even if they won't play again this season, Hendrick wanted to 'get out' and play after vowing he 'wasn't just going to sit around'.

Hendrick ultimately joined promotion-chasing QPR on loan until the end of the season and first-team manager Marc Warburton has revealed how Ferdinand played his part in the move on deadline day.

"Les was made aware early in the morning," Warburton told West London Sport's YouTube channel. "Literally the first we heard. He phoned me straight away.

"We discussed it throughout the day and then we thought it wouldn't happen and it came back again. That was one of those names, one of those deals, that suddenly became available under the radar.

"We knew other Championship clubs would immediately move for him when that became news but, thankfully, we got ahead of the pack and got the deal over the line."
