Leonardo DiCaprio net worth: Is he worth more than Brad Pitt? How did he earn his millions?

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio might have hit the big time after starring in 1997 film Titanic, going on to become Martin Scorsese's favorite for movies like Gangs of New York and The Wolf of Wall Street, but the Hollywood star has been acting since the age of five.

DiCaprio began his career in 1979 on a show called Romper Room and Friends, where he was allegedly kicked off their set for being disruptive. That didn’t stop him from being cast on other shows as a kid – he starred in Critters 3, Growing Pains and Rosanne too.

Once he got his role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape alongside Johnny Depp in 1993 (which earned him an Oscar nomination), DiCaprio’s career was off and running. From there, he starred in Romeo + Juliet and Titanic, where girls all across the world fell in love with his boyish good looks.

DiCaprio went on to earn Oscar nominations for his roles in The Aviator, Blood Diamond, The Wolf of Wall Street and The Revenant. He finally won his first Oscar for The Revenant in 2016, and put the Oscars jokes behind him at the Governor’s Ball post-ceremony, telling the engraver, “You do this every year? I wouldn’t know.”

With Once Upon a Time in Hollywood coming out, DiCaprio's career continues into its fourth decade. Earlier this year, Variety dropped a list of 2019’s highest paid actors, where DiCaprio fell in at number 10.

But how much is the actor worth in total? Here's a breakdown of the DiCaprio portfolio.

What is Leonardo DiCaprio’s net worth?

As of 2019, Dicaprio is estimated to be worth $260 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Which Leonardo DiCaprio movie made the most money?

(Warner Bros)

DiCaprio raked in $50 million for his role in Inception in 2010, which falls at number 10 on Business Insider’s list of the 17 highest paid roles of all time. The most for a single film on that list goes to Will Smith in Men in Black 3, which made him $100 million.

How does his wealth compare to other actors, like Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds?

According to Variety’s list of top paid Hollywood stars, DiCaprio falls in at number 10, earning an estimated $10 million for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - though that number reflects a $5 million pay cut he took to star in the film. Brad Pitt ranked number eight, but made the same amount as DiCaprio for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Ryan Reynolds soared above them both though, coming in at number one for making $27 million for Six Underground.

However, when it comes to overall wealth, Brad Pitt beat him out with a net worth of $300 million according to Celebrity Net Worth, and Ryan Reynolds fell short of both with a net worth of $75 million, also according to Celebrity Net Worth.

In addition to his starring roles, DiCaprio has some lucrative endorsement deals. In 2009, he signed a deal with watch company Tag Heuer, though he reportedly gave the money he earned from the deal to various environmental charities. He also shot commercials for Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp in 2011 where he reportedly made $5 million.

Along with his endorsement deals, DiCaprio is also paid to make appearances at events, like opening night of The Studio City Casino in Macau, China, which allegedly earned him a cool $17 million.

DiCaprio also leverages his property portfolio, renting out his Malibu home for $23-50,000 a month.

Additionally, DiCaprio has his own production company, Appian Way, which has produced The Assignation of Richard Nixon and Red Riding Hood and is set to produce multiple environmental documentaries for Netflix.

What does DiCaprio spend his money on?

DiCaprio doesn’t let his fortune go to waste. He spends much of his spare time on luxury yachts he has rented in the Mediterranean where he notoriously hosts boat-loads (pun intended) of parties for his famous friends.

The actor has also been known to drop a penny or two on art. He was photographed leaving the Art Basel Gallery in Switzerland, where he reportedly spent $1 million.

As most of the rich and famous do, DiCaprio has invested his money in multiple properties, from Hollywood Hills estates to NYC apartments and even his own island in Belize. He has reportedly spent $60 million on all of his properties combined.

Though he’s keen on protecting the environment, the actor has also dropped money on cars – he just sticks to hybrids. He reportedly owns a $25,000 Toyota Prius, a $120,000 Tesla Roadster, and $95,000 Fisker Karma Hybrid.

His loved ones benefit from his wealth as well. In 2015, he allegedly spent $10,800 on a Chanel bag for his mother at the Heart Fund Gala auction. He supposedly outbid Paris Hilton for the bag, who was bidding against him relentlessly.

How does DiCaprio give back?

DiCaprio is considered a United Nations Messenger of Peace for all of his charitable donations, which include funds he mostly uses to help protect the environment.

His foundation, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has raised millions of dollars for environmental causes from its annual charity galas.
