Leon King on his Rangers-daft family and the reason he swapped being a striker for defender

Leon King has opened up on his Rangers-daft family and how he used to play as a STRIKER.

The highly-regarded defender landed his latest first-team opportunity from boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst during the Champions League group stage opener against Ajax. The 18-year-old climbed off the bench for the second-half and helped the Ibrox men contain the Dutch giants in Amsterdam.

King played the full 90 minutes of the Premier Sports Cup win over Queen of the South with the rest of his time on the pitch coming off the bench so far this season. But after his mature showing last time out, he hopes to continue to help Rangers shut out opponents after back to back four goal defeats - including the Old Firm derby to Celtic.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “My dad’s a Rangers fan, all my family are. The fact I joined the club when I was younger was a big bonus and something they were really proud of. When I was younger I didn’t go to a lot of the games. I’d watch them on TV.”

He continued: “When I was younger I wasn’t a defender. At my boys’ club I played striker up until I was ten or 11.

“I scored a few goals as a striker. That was seven-a-sides so I’d shoot from anywhere and it would often go in to be fair.

“Then I became the biggest in the team and they said I was going back to being a centre-half.

“I’d say I’m quite adaptable and I can probably play most positions on the pitch.

“Hopefully that stands me in good stead so if anyone in the first team gets injured I can slot in and do a job.”
