Leon King and the key Rangers optimism as rising star mixes it with Champions League starlets

Leon King's top-level exposure has been a key success for Rangers in their Champions League adventure so far this season.

The rising star featured from the bench against both Ajax and Napoli and espite the defeats, the defender came on to make a positive impact for the Ibrox side. There have been few positives for manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst from the group stages but the emergence of 18-year-old King has been one.

The teen has played more than 85 minutes over both games including stoppage time, with only one player of his age group - Red Bull Salzburg’s Austrian midfielder Dijon Kameri - playing more. And there are just three minutes between the two in terms of game time in this term's Champions League campaign so far. But with more starts surely in the stoppers locker as the season continues, the top-level exposure both domestically and in Europe is set to continue.

The Scotland under-21 is seen as one of the prize assets coming through the Ibrox ranks. King has already made eight first-team appearances and played 90 minutes in the weekend win over Dundee United.

The centre half is out of contract in 2024 and Rangers are likely to move and extend that agreement sooner rather than later if the youngsters impressive development is anything to go by.
