Queens Park Rangers fans have growing concerns that centre-back Leon Balogun could join Michael Beale and return to Rangers in January.
Balogun was an ever-present in the Ibrox defence under both Steven Gerrard and Gio van Bronckhorst, but injuries meant the Nigeria international lost his starting spot and he was on the bench for the Europa League final in Seville. The the summer additions of John Souttar and Ben Davies, as well as Connor Goldson extending his stay in the Scottish Premiership, the Dutchman opted to let the 34-year-old leave Rangers.
Following the defensive shake up, Beale handed the versatile defender a career lifeline by taking him to Loftus Road where he became a regular starter in the English Championship. He made 12 appearance at the back for Beale as he kickstarted his managerial career, but with Gerrard's former assistant back at Ibrox R's fans are fearing the worst over their star's future.
Balogun missed the friendly clash with Livingston on Tuesday less that 24 hours after Beale's unveiling as Light Blues' boss. When the team news emerged for the game against David Martindale's side the punters were quick to ask "Where's Balogun?"
Others floated the theory that he would reunited with Beale at Rangers, with one joking: "He's away back to Rangers with Beale." Balogun penned a one-year-deal in the summer, and with Filip Helander, Souttar, Davies and Goldson all suffering injury woes, the London-based fans reckon a return could be on the cards.
The Nigerian also hasn't been shy in showing his support for Rangers, having spotted in the stands as his former teammates took on Union Saint Gilloise in the Champions League playoff. However, the reason for his absence could be less sinister.
The defender missed the final league game before the World Cup break with Beale confirming he had suffered a "minor calf injury". Interim boss Paul Hall could have allowed Balogun extra time to prove his fitness before the winter break is over.
