Leo Varadkar posts loved up Valentine's Day pictures at home with partner Matt Barrett

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has been with his boyfriend Dr. Matt Barrett for five years, and like the rest of the country, the pair enjoyed an intimate Valentine’s night at home together this weekend.

With bars and restaurants across the country shut as we remain in Level 5 lockdown, couples enjoyed a different kind of celebration this year, and the Dublin West TD and his beau were no exception.

Despite being confined to the four walls this year, Leo said he was looking forward to spending quality time together, having usually dealt with their busy and clashing schedules, reports rsvplive.

Taking to instagram, Leo gave his 192K followers a glimpse inside their romantic night. Sharing a snap of their delicious dinner, he wrote: “This Valentine’s Day is different but the things that matter most stay the same.”

Leo and Matt made the most of it and ordered in some cocktails for the night and of course celebrated with a delicious home cooked meal and topped it all off with a few glasses of red wine.

In an interview with the Irish Daily Mirror last week, Leo said: "Both Matt and I have extremely busy lives and Valentine's Day, if we were even in the same country, would be a chance to see each other but now we see each other every bloody night.

"I have ordered my Asador box, so cocktails and an Asador box, that is about as exciting as it gets these days."

Speaking to Mary McAleese on RTE's All Walks of Life recently, Leo opened up about swapping the single life for being in a committed relationship when he met Matt.

He admitted that being in a long term relationship changed his view on work and life balance.

He said on the show: "I liked being just me, living alone, being totally committed to work and not understanding why people weren't 100% committed the way I was.

“That does change. You do need somebody who you go home to sometimes, who you know is unconditionally on your side."

Leo also chatted about Matt and his decision to separate his own personal life from Leo's very public one as the leader of the country at the time, and now deputy leader.

He said: "Matt stays out of politics but that was one of the few things that he really wanted to do."
