Len Goodman's poignant reason for quitting Dancing with the Stars months before his death

Len Goodman has died at the age of 78, just months after he made an emotional retirement announcement on Dancing with the Stars.

The legendary judge and former ballroom dancer passed away from bone cancer as he was surrounded by members of his family in a hospice.

The sad news comes after the Brit said a tearful farewell to his post on the stateside show after an incredible 17 years in the hot seat.

His sparkling personality won over the American audience and he made the shock announcement that he was leaving during last season's semi-final show in November.

Addressing the audience with a tear in his eye, he said: "Whilst we're all getting excited and looking forward so much to the finale next week, it will also be with a touch of sadness as this will be my last season judging on Dancing with the Stars.

"I've been with the show since it started in 2005 and it has been a huge pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful show, but I've decided I'd like to spend more time with my grandchildren and family back in Britain."

The head judge continued: "I cannot thank you enough, the Dancing With the Stars family. It's been such a wonderful experience for me and I'm looking forward so much to next week's finale. I'm sure it's gonna be absolutely brilliant."

His fellow judges - Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli - immediately gathered around the affable star and gave him a big hug.

His decision was met with sadness by fans of the show, who took to social media in the aftermath of his speech to share their sorrow and to say they would miss him.

One user on Twitter gushed: "Len Goodman will always be one of the most iconic #DancingWithTheStars judges ever! I'm devastated to see him go & I hope he enjoys his retirement!"

As well as his stateside judging, Len was well known for his role on the UK's Strictly Come Dancing.

Len joined Strictly in 2004 before waltzing away from the show in 2016.

He had also featured on the small screen with appearances on Who Do You Think You Are, Desert Island Discs, Holiday of My Lifetime and Len and Ainsley’s big Food Adventure with pal Ainsley Harriott.

Len leaves behind his wife Sue, who he married in 2012 in a surprise ceremony. He also leaves behind his son James, from a previous relationship.
