Leitrim and Roscommon are the counties that have the most energy inefficient properties while Kildare comes in tops as the most energy efficient county.
This is according to a joint survey by Wizer Energy and Digital Funnel by analysing the most recent CSO figures.
Leitrim and Roscommon homes come in with 12 G rated homes as Tipperary follows closely behind with 11 G rated homes, while Offaly and Mayo feature with 10 apiece. Cavan, Westmeath and Longford all have nine G rated homes in their counties.
The greater Dublin area and its surrounding are the most energy efficient sections of the country - with Kildare topping the ranks with 20 A rated properties.
Meath and Dublin County follow with 19, Wicklow on 15 and Louth and Dublin City both clock in with 11 A rated properties.
“Your BER Rating is basically just a grade for the overall energy efficiency of your home,” said Martin Desmond, MD of Wizer Energy.
“It examines things like ventilation, insulation and supply of heating to the building in order to provide a score from A to G.
“Ideally you’d want your home to be receiving a C grade at the very least, so if your home has a G rating you’re overpaying on your bills.
He said having an older home doesn’t necessarily mean it’s less energy efficient - but the chances are it probably is.
But, there are ways of improving your BER rating and making your home more energy efficient, from insulation, installing solar panels or a wind turbine for renewable energy, laying some carpets or other soft furnishings to trap heat in. Draft excluders also keep the warm air in and the cold air out.
And by switching your light bulbs to LED bulbs can use 75% less energy in certain cases compared to incandescent bulbs.
