Leigh Wood reveals Nottingham Forest City Ground update at Michael Conlan press conference

Leigh Wood has been assured a dream fight at Nottingham Forest's City Ground 'is happening' if he beats Michael Conlan.

Wood will put his WBA featherweight title on the line against the Northern Irish Conlan at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday night.

The two are face-to-face in their pre-fight press conference on Thursday afternoon, with the Nottingham champion preparing to face the toughest test of his career so far.

It will be the first time that Wood defends his WBA title after winning it from China's Xu Can last July in an upset.

Forest fan Wood will come in as the underdog, but a win would hugely elevate his stature in his bid to one day fight at the City Ground - an ambition he addressed once again this week.

Speaking to the media this afternoon, Wood said: "I couldn't be happier with my camp for this fight. I have the best version of Mick and he has the best version of me. And the best man will win.

"I am going to go further than this, too. Eddie (Hearn) has dangled the carrot in front of me on a Nottingham Forest fight. After this fight, it’s happening."

When asked for a prediction, Wood said: "I believe I defend my title. People thanked me for turning up against Can Xu and didn't expect me to win, but I always knew I would win.

"I have always been confident. In the gym, through injuries, and I am confident in my ability."

Hundreds of Irish fans are expected to make the trip to watch Conlan, who is the bookies' favourite to take the belt from the hometown hero.

Jamie Conlan, Michael's older brother and trainer, said: “We have come to spoil your boys party and send the Irish home happy. I fully expect him to become world championship – we’re fully confident.

“Leigh Wood is an obstacle in the way for us, this is Michael Conlan’s party.”

When asked for his prediction for the fight, Wood's opponent, Michael said: “I am very confidence and very relaxed – that comes from my preparation.

“I know what kind of performance is coming on Saturday night. I am in his back garden and I’m here to rip the belt off him.”
