Leigh Wood dream could be scuppered as Eddie Hearn admits 'difficult' City Ground fight plans

Leigh Wood wants his next fight to be at the City Ground but promoter Eddie Hearn has admitted there are likely to be logistical challenges.

The Nottingham Forest fan regained the WBA featherweight title on Saturday night after a unanimous points decision win over Mexico's Mauricio Lara.

And Wood revealed in the aftermath of his win that he wants one of the final fights of his career to be at the Reds' home ground. But there are logistical issues, with the new Premier League campaign beginning in August and only a few international breaks during the season.

"Everyone wants to do it," Hearn said after the fight. "They're a football club. That's their business. Do they want to do it? Of course.

"The logistics of doing it now, it would have to be in September. If the groundstaff and all those people would allow you to go on the pitch during an away weekend, it's a very difficult turnaround.

"You have to put a huge amount of pressure and recovery on the pitch. It needs to recover afterwards.

"Some pitches can do that, some can't. I want to do it. I think there's a few quid in it. It has to be in September though. Also, with the mandatory people won't wait around.

"If it's not in September, or October, he could do next summer, but it's like Katie Taylor in Dublin, you wait, wait, wait. I want to do it now. Josh Warrington is the fight. He could sell 15,000 himself from Leeds."

Wood hopes a fight at the City Ground can be organised for a September international break and was clear as to why he wanted it at the Reds' stadium.

'It's the first person to do it, it's the history," he said. "I'm a massive Forest fan. Leaving my stamp on the city. Carl Froch has done a lot, if you didn't know, 80,000 (at Wembley). There'd be nothing better for me to leave my legacy than being the first person to fight at the City Ground.

"They've just had a new pitch laid. End of September, there might be an international break."

Wood was cheered on by plenty of Reds fans on Saturday night as he put on a superb performance to reclaim his title. Here's what a few of them had to say on social media after the fight...
