Leigh Griffiths transfer latest as SPFL League Two club pass up on former Celtic striker

Forfar Athletic manager Gary Irvine says his side won't be signing former Celtic hitman Leigh Griffiths - although they did consider it.

The Scotland international has had a tough year following a surprise contract extension in the early days of Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou's reign last summer. He spent the first half of last season back at Dundee but dropped from Premiership level to League One by signing for Falkirk in the winter. Overall the 31-year-old netted five times in 30 matches, including two in 13 third tier outings at the Bairns.

Irvine and first-team coach Gary Harkins are good friends with Griffiths but an old pals act won't be happening in Scotland's League Two. He told the Sun : "We gave it a thought but that was a good few weeks down the line. Since then, I’ve moved on and got my attacking options in now. That won’t be happening. Sparky is a good friend of myself and Jeebs.

“He is a top player, just a couple of years ago he was still one of the main strikers in Scotland. If Leigh gets himself back to fitness he is probably above our level, if I’m honest.”

Griffiths joined Celtic in 2014 and enjoyed several trophy-laden seasons before his initial loan exit last summer. The forward netted 123 times in 262 green and white outings.
