Leigh Griffiths handed post Celtic blow as striker dropped by Dundee during loan

Celtic outcast Leigh Griffiths has been benched for Dundee as he bids to earn a Dens Park deal.

The striker will become a free agent at the end of the month after his Parkhead contract was ripped up while on loan with The Dark Blues.

The 31-year-old will see out the remainder of his his loan with the Premiership strugglers having netted twice so far this season.

Griffiths scored in the last game before the winter break against Aberdeen, but boss James McPake has dropped the Scotland cap with his career in limbo for the clash with Livingston. He will be hoping to make a cameo and impress against the Lions.

Dundee go into the game in West Lothian having lost their last six games and sitting second bottom of the table.

Since Record Sport exclusively broke the news that Griffiths was to be released from his Celtic contract, McPake has admitted he is interested in snapping up the striker.

He said: "When players like Leigh Griffiths pop up, you're always interested, our focus as a club is on (the game) at Livingston.

"The situation is what it is, I can't speak on behalf of Celtic, hopefully he goes and has a positive impact in our team.

"He's showing a desire to kick-start his career of late with that free-kick away to Aberdeen and scored in a bounce game last week against Forfar.

"That goal against Aberdeen is something Leigh has done all his career, he's a player that loves scoring goals and enjoying his football.

"When you get Griffiths scoring goals then you're getting a good player and we need to add more goals into him in the second half of the season."
