The battle for the Premier League title has looked like a procession rather than a race for some time now, but Liverpool moved a step closer to making it a mathematical certainty today by beating strugglers Leicester.
It was local boy Trent Alexander-Arnold who secured the win, coming off the bench to score in the 75th minute, in his first appearance since an injury sustained in early March.
The right-back made his 350th appearance in a Liverpool shirt count amid feverish speculation over his potential departure to Real Madrid, scoring his first left-footed goal in his entire career and immediately charging over to the travelling fans to celebrate.
Leicester meanwhile frustrated Liverpool for long periods and even had a Conor Coady goal ruled out for a foul by Patson Daka on Reds keeper Alisson Becker in the build-up, but were ultimately second-best and were condemned to the drop at the final whistle, their second relegation in three seasons.
Arne Slot’s side are now just three points away from lifting the trophy, although second-placed Arsenal’s earlier win over Ipswich meant the Reds couldn’t seal the title this afternoon.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s heroics at Leicester provide crowning glory for champions-elect Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 20:12 , Flo CliffordHe may soon be the Scouser in the Real Madrid team but Trent Alexander-Arnold is ever likelier to leave Liverpool a Premier League champion. A winner at Leicester could prove his last goal, his final great contribution in a Liverpool shirt, but while he might soon discard it for the white of Real, here it was removed for a topless celebration that indicated his enduring love for his hometown club.
It felt mutual. After the accusations of disloyalty from a section of the fanbase, he was serenaded by the match-going public at the end. “Special moments that will live with me forever,” he said.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s heroics at Leicester provide crowning glory for Liverpool
'Absolutely devastated' Leicester
Sunday 20 April 2025 19:20 , Flo CliffordLeicester defender Coady continues, “We've took a bit of stick and we'll continue to take stick because it's deserved.
“From minute one this season, we haven't been at a level to fully compete in the Premier League and you have to be because it'll chew you up and spit you out.
“It's something we have to look at because we're absolutely devastated.”
Back down to the Championship for the Foxes, and you’d wager Ruud van Nistelrooy might be out of a job soon too.
'It's not been anywhere near good enough' - Conor Coady
Sunday 20 April 2025 19:08 , Flo Clifford“We've not been good enough all season,” a disappointed Conor Coady tells Sky Sports. “I thought we played quite well today, moved the ball well and nullified Liverpool - they're a world-class side. But we look back on this season and it's not been anywhere near good enough.
“We've got to look at ourselves as players in the mirror. We have to now, what's happened has happened. We have to try and put this club in a better position come the summer because we haven't been good enough.”
Alexander-Arnold credits the away fans
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:52 , Flo CliffordLovely moment at the end as Liverpool captain Van Dijk gesticulated to Alexander-Arnold to take in the applause of the travelling fans.
He says, “[Virgil] pushed me to the front to soak it in to get close and personal - the away fans are amazing. They've pushed us every game until the final minute. They helped us win the game.
“To be so close to sealing a league title - a first one in front of fans which is what we’ve been missing - is very special.”
No news on the contract situation
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:48 , Flo CliffordInevitably, Alexander-Arnold is asked about his contract situation, but he remains tight-lipped.
“I'm not going to speak on my situation or go into details. These days are always special, scoring goals, winning games, being close to winning titles - they are special moments that will live with me forever. And I'm glad to be part of it.”
Think fans will be reading quite a lot into that.
'One of the best moments' - Alexander-Arnold
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:43 , Flo Clifford"Sure, it was [one of the best moments in a Liverpool shirt],” the goalscorer tells Sky Sports.
“The fans have been outstanding. They have pushed us every game and they did the same today as well.
“The least they deserve is seeing us giving 100% on the pitch and win the game. It's very special.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold: 'That's the one type of goal I've been missing'
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:38 , Flo CliffordTrent Alexander-Arnold speaks to Sky Sports.
“I think being so close to winning title and first back from injury, it was an important game for me.
“I was happy to contribute with the goal - it was a big one. I'm sure it's my first left-footed goal of my career so it's taken a few years but I got there in the end. That's the one type of goal I've been missing but I saved it for the right time.
“We're one win away now [from lifting the trophy] and to do it with fans here is very special.”
Perhaps a last goal in a Liverpool shirt for Trent Alexander-Arnold
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:35 , Richard JollyPerhaps a last goal in a Liverpool shirt for Trent Alexander-Arnold, perhaps a last great moment. Liverpool deserved victory for their persistence and purpose. Over the season, Leicester deserve relegation. They have shown spirit today but they have gone down with a whimper. There were some boos at the final whistle, though fewer than in other games. That may reflect the spirit showed today but it has been a disastrous season for them.
Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:30 , Flo Clifford“We’re going to win the league,” sing the travelling fans. Not much arguing with that.
Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:28 , Flo CliffordAlexander-Arnold looks a very happy man, walking over to the travelling fans, fist-pumping the air and applauding.
Plenty to read into that, I’m sure.
FULL-TIME: Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:26 , Flo CliffordLiverpool are one step closer to the title, back up to 13 points clear of Arsenal, courtesy of home hero Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Skipp crosses into the box, Daka plays a short pass but Buonanotte but he skies it over the bar! Another wasted chance.
The Liverpool fans are in fine voice as the seconds tick away.
Leicester 0-1 Liverpool

Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:19 , Flo Clifford90+2 mins: Justin’s cross drifts past Monga at the far post. The hosts knock the ball around for a bit, looking resigned to their fate.
Leicester are inching closer to an unwanted record of nine successive home games without scoring.
Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:17 , Flo Clifford90 mins: Hermansen clatters Faes attempting to clear a cross, but both seem okay. Leicester are still fighting here.
There will be SEVEN minutes added on.
Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:16 , Flo Clifford88 mins: Monga - who is so young he can’t wear the name of Leicester’s betting company sponsor on his shirt - immediately gets himself stuck in, darting down the right. He tries to hook a pass to a teammate but none are there, under pressure by both Alexander-Arnold and Elliott.
Jota breaks for Liverpool but the move fizzles out; Alexander-Arnold tries another one from range but it’s blocked.
Amazingly, that 75th-minute strike was Alexander-Arnold’s first left-footed goal in his career, for either club or country, Sky Sports tell us.
Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:12 , Flo Clifford85 mins: Now Mavididi, hands down Leicester’s best player today, appears to have hurt himself and comes off for 15-year-old Jeremy Monga.
CHANCE! Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:11 , Flo Clifford84 mins: Mavididi lays off a lovely ball to Buonanotte but his shot drifts wide!
Van Nistelrooy makes changes. Justin comes on for Ricardo Pereira and Skipp replaces Ndidi.
Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:08 , Flo Clifford80 mins: Leicester wanted that disallowed for a foul in the build-up, but no dice. They’re going down as it stands.
A huge, huge moment for Alexander-Arnold, who came off the bench to a raucous reception and immediately sprinted over to the Liverpool fans to celebrate that goal.
Liverpool press again. Good block by Coady to deny Salah as he runs onto Elliott’s ball; Ndidi challenges him at the byline and it goes out for a corner.
GOAL! Leicester 0-1 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:04 , Flo Clifford75 mins: Absolute madness! Alexander-Arnold whips in a cross but it thumps out off Thomas. Tsimikas takes the corner and somehow it bounces around for ages, Salah slams it off the post, it eventually falls to the right-back, and he slots it home from the edge of the box! Hermansen should have saved, but didn’t.
Alexander-Arnold rips off his shirt and runs to celebrate with the travelling fans.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:01 , Flo Clifford74 mins: Elliott shoots from range and puts his arm up as it deflected off Thomas. The officials don’t spot it and give a goal kick.
Leicester's display of resistance may have come too late
Sunday 20 April 2025 18:00 , Richard JollyMany a Liverpool fan wanted them to win the title at Anfield against Tottenham next week. If this finishes 0-0, that prospect will be less likely. They are up to 20 shots with no breakthrough. Leicester's display of resistance may have come when it is too late for them
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:58 , Flo Clifford71 mins: Ndidi goes into the book for clipping Mac Allister.
Subs for Liverpool: Szoboszlai is replaced by Harvey Elliott, while Trent Alexander-Arnold gets his first minutes since 11 March as he replaces Bradley. It’s his 350th game for the club, possibly one of his last.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:57 , Flo Clifford70 mins: That was Coady who eventually knocked the ball into the net, but the ref was quick to disallow it for that foul. Ruud van Nistelrooy isn’t best pleased, but it’s the right call.
Liverpool break again. Now Konate sends in a long looping ball... straight into the arms of Hermansen.
Better from Leicester in the last few minutes: Daka runs into Bradley and goes down in the box as Leicester’s subs combine well on the counter. Play continues, now Daka fires from range - but Alisson runs out to collect.
DISALLOWED GOAL! Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:54 , Flo Clifford66 mins: Bradley is the first into the book for a foul on Mavididi, who has been giving him serious grief this afternoon.
Szoboszlai gets his head to the resulting free-kick but it isn’t properly cleared; Daka chips the volley in behind him and it ends up in the back of the net, but immediately disallowed for Daka’s foul on Alisson in the build-up, knocking the keeper off balance.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:51 , Flo Clifford64 mins: Early chance for substitute Jota as Liverpool break. Szoboszlai lays off a lovely cross for him in the middle of the box but he nods his header wide, with Hermansen diving to save.
That was a 20th shot by Liverpool. None of them have been very good.
SUBS: Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:48 , Flo Clifford60 mins: More chances for Liverpool. Bradley charges into the box but lays it off for someone in the box rather than shooting. It eventually falls to Salah but his left-footed shot goes wide. Not been the best of days for him.
Arne Slot has had enough and makes a change, hauling off Gakpo for Diogo Jota.
Changes for Leicester too: Vardy, who’s had a very quiet day, makes way for Daka and De Cordova-Reid is replaced by Buonanotte.
CHANCE! Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:45 , Flo Clifford57 mins: Backs to the wall for Leicester. Diaz chips the ball away from a horde of Leicester shirts yards out from goal. Tsimikas is finely placed to latch onto the loose ball, but Hermansen leaps out to save.
Now the hosts counter, but it’s snuffed out.
'Concerted assault' on the Leicester goal
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:43 , Richard JollyThis is a concerted assault on the Leicester goal now. Liverpool are camped in City territory, attacking time and again. There is plenty of purpose from them, but not the finishing touch so far. Which, perhaps, is another way of showing the importance of Mohamed Salah: on a day when he has not scored, no one else has managed to. Yet, anyway.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:42 , Flo Clifford55 mins: Rare chance for Leicester! El Khannouss robs Tsimikas and whips in a cross to Vardy but Alisson reads it well and gets to it first.
Now Liverpool break, Szoboszlai pulls it back at the byline for Gakpo but the Dutchman’s shot from close range takes a deflection.
Liverpool charge forward again, Bradley runs onto Gravenberch’s ball at the near post and cuts it in for Diaz, but he blasts his attempt over the bar.

Hermansen punches away another Liverpool corner.
CHANCE! Leicester 0-0 Liverpool

Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:35 , Flo Clifford47 mins: Gravenberch charges forward and dances round his man in midfield as Liverpool look to press on.
Tsimikas fires in a cross and again Thomas gets to it before Salah at the far post! The youngster is having a good game.
Tsimikas’ corner is cleared.
SECOND HALF: Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:32 , Flo Clifford46 mins: Back underway!
Can either side break the deadlock?
Leicester on course for a creditable draw
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:25 , Richard JollyLeicester are 45 minutes away from one of the best results of their season. They are also 45 minutes away from relegation. It feels rather too late. But, as Liverpool raised the tempo and had several chances at the end of the first half, it is a big ask for Leicester to turn a creditable draw into a victory that will keep them alive for a little longer.
HALF-TIME: Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:18 , Flo CliffordAnd that Diaz attempt is the last kick of the half!
All square at the King Power. Leicester were under a lot of pressure, briefly threatened on the counter - mostly through Mavadidi, who looks their best player today - but successfully rode the wave.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:17 , Flo Clifford45 mins: Another Liverpool move forward. This time Hermansen runs off his line to collect before Salah can get to it. He does the same again with Gakpo racing onto the ball - seems a good tactic.
One minute added on. Leicester have successfully slowed the pace down in the last five minutes.
The ball falls to Diaz in the box but his acrobatic bicycle kick (of sorts) drifts wide!
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:14 , Flo Clifford43 mins: Vardy has been extremely anonymous so far. His first contribution of note is absolutely clattering into Konate as they vie for the ball in the air. Vardy goes flying over the top of him, with both hitting the deck. Ouch.
CHANCE! Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:13 , Flo Clifford42 mins: A Liverpool goal feels on the cards but the visitors haven’t been able to take their chances.
Tsimikas makes an overlapping run onto Gakpo’s ball down the left channel, pulling it back for Salah, but his angle is all wrong and it’s skied over the bar. Another rueful smile from Liverpool’s star man.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:11 , Flo Clifford40 mins: Gakpo curls in a cross to the back post but it’s drifting towards the top corner rather than any of Liverpool’s players and Hermansen has to jump to palm it away!
Now Konate tries to nod down the header but Ndidi gets an acrobatic foot to it to deflect behind! Faes boots out the resulting corner.
Hermansen is there again to save from Gakpo as Bradley lays it off for the Dutchman. All Liverpool at the moment.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:09 , Flo Clifford37 mins: Diaz flicks it on for Gakpo, who dives for the header with Hermansen scrambling to the near post, but the keeper eventually gets to it.
Coady was caught unawares there, not knowing Diaz was in behind him.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:05 , Flo Clifford34 mins: Thomas again gets his head to a cross before Salah, swivelling and knocking it behind for a corner.
Konate gets a glancing header to Mac Allister’s delivery but it falls straight into Hermansen’s gloves.
Mavididi a bright spark for Leicester
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:03 , Richard JollySomething of an impasse after that flurry of early chances but Stephy Mavididi has been a bright spark for Leicester, troubling Conor Bradley. It is a reminder that there are some gifted players in this Leicester side, horrendous as their season has been. It probably didn't need to be this bad a campaign.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:02 , Flo Clifford31 mins: Leicester concede another free-kick, this time for Mavididi charging in on Bradley.
This one’s in a better position, further to the right. Mac Allister stands ready to take. Thomas, having a good game so far, heads away.
El Khannouss goes down and stays down after a stamp by Mac Allister, but he looks okay to carry on.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 17:00 , Flo Clifford29 mins: Szoboszlai shoots! But it falls kindly to Hermansen.
Now Thomas gets in the way of Salah again at the far post, deflecting a cross by Tsimikas as the Egyptian attempts to volley in.
Mac Allister whacks in the resulting corner but there are too many Leicester bodies in the box for anything to come of it.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:57 , Flo Clifford27 mins: Ndidi concedes a free-kick kicking through Luis Diaz. It’s a fair way out but pretty central.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:55 , Flo Clifford24 mins: Bradley latches onto a ball into the Leicester box but thumps an attempt against a defender, and the Foxes eventually clear.
Not exactly vintage football from the league leaders so far.
Now Faes crosses in a lovely long ball to the ever-dangerous Mavididi on the left, but the flag goes up.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:52 , Flo Clifford21 mins: Good attacking intent by Leicester. Salah sets off in pursuit of El Khannouss and shoves his man over to concede a free-kick on the far left, not far from the sideline and 15 yards or so out from the Liverpool goal.
Thomas’s looping delivery finds Coady on the right but Liverpool clear. Mavididi gets the better of Bradley again and Leicester keep pushing...
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:49 , Flo Clifford18 mins: Soumare wins a free-kick off Gravenberch in Liverpool’s half. It’s crossed on by Ndidi to Vardy in the box but Alisson collects easily - that looked to bounce off Van Dijk en route.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:47 , Flo Clifford16 mins: After a nervous first couple of minutes Leicester have been taking the fight to the league leaders.
They’ve got their work cut out, mind. Gakpo cuts inside but his attempt is caught by Hermansen.
Busy day incoming for Leicester's defence
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:43 , Flo CliffordAlmost a first in 2025 for Leicester: a league goal at home. Wilfred Ndidi struck the post. Mohamed Salah has gone closer, hitting both posts. A busy day for the woodwork at the King Power. And perhaps also for the Leicester defence.
CLOSE! Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:43 , Flo Clifford11 mins: Madness! Mavididi gets the better of Bradley down the left, pulling it back to Ndidi in the box, who beats Mac Allister and Alisson but thunders his attempt off the post.
Immediately Liverpool sprint down the other end and Salah forces a save from Hermansen; Salah comes again, looking for Diaz in the box, but it takes a hefty deflection onto the roof of the net.
Breathless stuff.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:40 , Flo Clifford9 mins: Thomas tracks a long ball to Salah, getting his body in the way to send it out for a corner.
Faes just about gets his head to the delivery before Van Dijk, who isn’t happy about it.
Leicester 0-0 Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:38 , Flo Clifford6 mins: That was poor by Leicester, with Ndidi playing Salah onside as Diaz teed him up just 12 yards or so from goal.
Now Leicester counter, De Cordova-Reid makes a great run and sidefoots Tsimikas, but El Khannouss doesn’t quite get onto his cross. Bradley gets away with one after tackling Mavididi in the box, with his man losing control of the ball.
CHANCE! Leicester vs Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:34 , Flo Clifford3 mins: Salah rolls an attempt against the far post! It then bounces off the other post as Hermansen scrambles to get there and Slot has his head in his hands.
The Egyptian gives a wry smile.
Leicester vs Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:33 , Flo Clifford2 mins: Nervy start by Leicester. There’s a poor clearance by Hermansen as the ball quickly makes its way to the Foxes box, but danger is averted.
Bradley, keeping his place with Alexander-Arnold on the bench, picks Mavididi’s pocket as the forward attempts a move goalwards.
KICK-OFF: Leicester vs Liverpool
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:31 , Flo CliffordLiverpool get us underway!

Ten minutes to go
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:20 , Flo CliffordNearly time for kickoff at the King Power Stadium.
Can Liverpool seal just their second league title in 35 years today, or will the wait go on? Can Leicester postpone the inevitable?
Crunch time at the King Power
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:15 , Richard JollyA day that could seal the fate of one team. Not Liverpool, with Arsenal's win over Ipswich meaning they cannot win the title until Wednesday at the earliest, but Leicester, who could be relegated. Their form under Ruud van Nistelrooy suggests they will be today, despite getting a point at Brighton last week. Arne Slot brings in Cody Gakpo, who played for Van Nistelrooy at PSV Eindhoven, in place of Diogo Jota.
How the table looks
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:10 , Flo CliffordThe hosts are 19th, a huge 18 points off 17th-placed Wolves with six games to play.
Liverpool are top, ten points ahead of Arsenal with six games to play (five for the Gunners) and needing just six more points to seal the title.
Full-time in Ipswich
Sunday 20 April 2025 16:02 , Flo CliffordArsenal thrashed Ipswich 4-0, moving them to ten points behind Liverpool in the table, so there will be no title parade today.
Blue skies at the King Power
Sunday 20 April 2025 15:45 , Flo Clifford

How it stands
Sunday 20 April 2025 15:35 , Flo CliffordWith Ipswich vs Arsenal at just over the hour mark, the Gunners are 2-0 up and cruising against the 10-man Tractor Boys.
Barring a total collapse, Arsenal will prevent Liverpool from officially claiming the title today as they’ll move up to ten points behind the Reds.

Should Arsenal lose at Ipswich earlier on Sunday afternoon then Liverpool can seal their second league title in 35 years by beating the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.
If Arsenal draw or win earlier on, victory for Liverpool would mean they will have the opportunity to win the title at Anfield next weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.
Good afternoon
Sunday 20 April 2025 14:00 , Flo CliffordHello and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of this Premier League clash.
It’s top meets (nearly) bottom as Liverpool look to sew up the title, and Leicester bid to stave off what looks like the inevitable drop.
We’ll have all the build-up to kickoff at 4.30pm, so don’t go anywhere...
