Leicester crash: Ambulance overturns in 'serious' early-morning collision with car

An ambulance has overturned after a serious early-morning crash with a car.

Two clinicians and a patient were inside the emergency vehicle at the time, with one crew member taken to hospital.

Firefighters were able to safely free all involved.

Photos from the scene show the ambulance having toppled onto its side in the middle of a Leicester road near a Tesco supermarket, reports LeicestershireLive.

A silver car, with a caved in bonnet, is also seen close by having rammed into a set of traffic lights, which have been left at an angle.

Leicestershire Police have warned motorists to avoid the area, with Welford Road closed at Asquith Boulevard junction city-bound towards the Tesco Express in Lutterworth Road.

The force said: "Officers were called shortly before 6.25am today (May 12) to a report of a collision involving a car and an ambulance. Inside the ambulance were two clinicians from the East Midlands Ambulance Service and a patient.

"One of the crew members is being taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening or life changing. No one else has been injured."

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS), who attended the scene, confirmed that all people involved in the crash have been freed from the vehicles involved.

A spokesman said: "We were called to an incident at about 6.27am this morning following reports and sent one appliance from Wigston Fire Station, one from Central and a Technical Rescue Team too.

"Our teams safely extricated all people in the vehicles and then made the vehicles themselves safe. We left the incident at 7.16am, handing over duties to Leicestershire Police."

An East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “The patient on board the ambulance at the time of the collision continued their journey to hospital in another ambulance.

"Following an assessment of both ambulance crew members involved in the collision, one of the crew has also been taken to hospital via ambulance."

Pratik Master, owner of Wigston Deli in Carlton Drive, said there is standstill traffic in the area, leading back for 30 minutes. He said he witnessed the aftermath of the crash on his way to work.

He said: "I saw the ambulance overturned on its side - just hope the people inside are ok."

Another witness said: “I was leaving the house for work and I just couldn't believe my eyes.

"I thought I had heard something earlier on like a bang but I definitely did not expect to open my door and walk out to a car crash with an ambulance on its side.”

The ambulance was righted and taken away by recovery crews around 10am.
