Leicester City, currently competing in the second-tier Championship, will not face any points deduction if found guilty of violating the Premier League's spending rules, as confirmed by the English Football League (EFL) on Friday. The club, which was relegated from the Premier League last season, is under investigation by an independent commission for alleged breaches of the league's financial regulations.
The EFL stated that they do not possess the authority to penalize Leicester with points deductions while they are participating in the Championship. Initially, the EFL had indicated that they would enforce any sanctions imposed by the Premier League on Leicester during their time in the second tier, a decision that Leicester opposed. However, the EFL later revised its stance in a communication to the English FA's League Arbitration Panel (LAP).
In a formal statement, the EFL clarified that they lack the jurisdiction, as per the current regulations, to dock points from Leicester. The club has expressed its willingness to cooperate with both the Premier League and the EFL throughout the investigation process.
The LAP has announced that the disciplinary proceedings initiated by the Premier League against Leicester will not be expedited to conclude by May 4, as any potential points deductions would not impact the ongoing season. Leicester currently leads the Championship standings with 88 points from 41 matches, as they aim to secure promotion back to the Premier League.
