Lego scam warning as fraudsters offer £735 sets for £3 on Facebook

Fraudsters are offering a too good to be true Lego deal on Facebook in a bid to steal bank details, social media users have been warned. The scam sees a post purporting to be giving away £735 sets to some lucky winners for just £3.

Consumer organisation Which? has warned of the 'offer' which it says has the 'classic hallmarks of a giveaway scam'. It includes games inviting users to pick the right box in order to win Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon, which usually sells for £734.99.

The post - complete with positive comments from previous 'winners' - takes anyone who clicks on it to an order page containing fake Lego branding. It says there is a time limit for a 'prize' to be claimed, with people also asked to make a small payment.

Which? warns that anyone who does this will be giving away their bank details to fraudsters. Lego told Which? it was aware of the scam.

It said: "We take this extremely seriously and are currently investigating the issue." It has also urged shoppers to be vigilant when purchasing online.

Anyone who has fallen for the scam should contact their bank immediately. You should also report the scam Action Fraud and report the post to Facebook by clicking the three dots in the top corner of the post.

Other tell tale signs of giveaway scams are that accounts have few followers but scores of comments, promising items worth hundreds for just a few pounds. You will also be taken to a URL that won't be affiliated to the manufacturer of the product you are 'buying'.
