Legendary New York graffiti artist launches brand new Dublin exhibition

In the past few weeks, Dublin has been treated to an abundance of new exhibitions and cultural experiences for city dwellers to enjoy.

The latest comes in the form of a brand new exhibition at The Horse from legendary New York graffiti artist SMAT RIS.

Opening in the new gallery and project space founded by artist Matthew Wilkinson at Bethesda Place, the new body of work by the iconic artist will be presented until March 17.

SMART RIS is a member of the infamous New York Rockin’ It Suckers graffiti crew and has been creating works for over 30 years, having collaborated with some of the leading names on the scene including Chris Ellis (DAZE), Todd James (REAS) and Stephen Powers (ESPO).

The new exhibition sees the artist showcase a collection of drip paintings made on location at the new Dublin gallery.

Curator Matthew Wilkinson said of the exhibition: "The paintings are rooted in that childhood memory of the studio floor, the compositions produced are investigations into the states that accompany the action surrounding a night of writing illegally.

"The night sky, the stars, the lines that are produced by the spray can. The exhibition is a unique opportunity to see work by the artist in Ireland."

The building in which the new studio is located was originally a coach house which was connected to the townhouse behind it. The brand new space aims to provide a platform for both underrepresented and established art-makers from all backgrounds.

The gallery had its first exhibition in September 2021 when art enthusiasts got to experience Dynamic Power which was curated by Suzanne Egeran and featured work from Katie Holten, Cynthia Madansky and Matthew Wilkinson.

SMART RIS' graffiti art exhibition The Drip is on show now.
