Legendary Los Angeles DJ Geno Michellini Passes Away At 77

People walk by the Los Angeles Times building in Los Angeles

Geno Michellini, a legendary voice in the Los Angeles rock scene, passed away at the age of 77 on March 2. His death, attributed to natural causes, was confirmed by close friends in an official obituary. Michellini, known for his tenure as the afternoon DJ on KLOS during the '80s and '90s, left a lasting impact on the music industry.

During his time at KLOS, Michellini hosted the popular 'Power Cuts' syndicated program on the Global Satellite Network and became a beloved figure among listeners. His signature phrases, such as 'How Ya Doin'' and 'Bang the Drum,' were iconic elements of his on-air persona.

Michellini's career in radio began in the Philippines, where he broadcasted on Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War. He later transitioned to free-form rock radio in various cities, including Sacramento, San Jose, and San Francisco, before landing at KLOS in 1984.

Known for his rebellious spirit, Michellini clashed with corporate programming constraints but remained true to his unique style. His departure from KLOS in 1994 marked the end of an era for many longtime fans, signaling a shift towards a more contemporary radio approach.

Following his time at KLOS, Michellini continued his radio career on stations like KFI, KCAL, and KLSX. Despite facing personal challenges, including the loss of close friend Dusty Street, Michellini found solace in his final days and was planning a trip to Tahiti before his passing.

In accordance with his wishes, Michellini was cremated, and his ashes were scattered into the ocean from Manhattan Beach. His legacy as a pioneering DJ and influential voice in rock music will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
