A popular city centre bar has announced its shock closure after 22 years in business. The Font, on New Wakefield Street, will close its doors for a final time on Saturday night (January 7).
The bar, which is a particular hit with students for selling cocktails for as little as £3, stated that the rising cost of living, and the knock-on impact from the pandemic have taken an 'insurmountable toll' on the business in recent years.
The firm previously owned a bar on Wilmslow Road in Fallowfield, which closed back in 2018. Their other venue, on Manchester Road in Chorlton, has confirmed it is remaining open.

In a statement on Facebook on Friday evening (January 6), The Font wrote: "Farewell Font Manchester. With sorrowful hearts we regret to announce The Font Manchester is closing for business.
"Unfortunately the impact of COVID, followed by the cost of living crisis has taken an insurmountable toll and while this is tough news for sure, we feel comforted by the memories of the last 22 years and the countless awesome times we’ve had here!
"Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to all our staff, customers and friends past and present, your support has meant the world. All bookings will be contacted in time. Plus if you have any remaining credit on your app you can still spend it at The Font, Chorlton who will remain open.
"So friends, feel free to head over tomorrow night, share your memories and raise a cocktail for dear Fonty. From all of us at Team Font, we love and adore you xx"
There was much upset to the announcement from customers, with one person saying: "Fond memories, I worked over the road and we would be in here every lunch time, even when I was a nipper we would be in here having our pre- drinks. I had my 18th birthday party downstairs. It’s been a blast Font!"
Another commented: "So many great memories stood on that door, such a shame" as a third person added: "Oh my god, another legendary place where I spent my late teens and twenties going. Such a shame, was a fab place to go."
