'Legendary' ice cream man was 'father we didn't have'

The daughter of an L8 'Legend' who died has thanked the local community for their messages of support.

Paul Wilson, dubbed "Icey man Paul", served as an ice cream man around Toxteth for more than 30 years, with hundreds of people paying tribute following his death at the age of 56. Paul's daughter, Carla Wilson, shared some of the loving tributes paid to her dad.

She told the ECHO: "I've had so many messages from people who are complete strangers to me saying lovely things about my dad.

"One person got in touch and said 'I don't think you know how important your dad was to the community, for a lot of us he was like the father we didn't have'."

Paul, who was a dad of six and had seven grandchildren, was admitted to Royal Liverpool University Hospital on Sunday, July 18 and died one day later on July 19. The family are waiting for the full results of a postmortem.

Paul also played an important part in helping Liverpool City Council to reach out to people in the Princes Park ward during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Paying tribute to Paul, the council shared a video from August 2020 of him distributing leaflets from his ice cream van about the dangers of the rising covid infections and the importance of getting tested.

Carla said: "The word that kept coming up was 'legend', everyone keeps calling him a legend."

Paul will be remembered by his six children: Carla, Kirsty, Anita, Paul, Callum and Jessica, as well as his seven grandchildren: Kyle, Molly, Max, Freddie, Ivy, Manson and Leighton.

A large funeral procession will travel through L8, starting along Lodge Lane to remember Paul at 11.55am on Monday, August 8. The convoy will be led by Paul's ice cream man, which brought joy to the community for generations.

The funeral will then head to Springwood Crematorium for 12.30pm.
