Leeds United vow to issue lifetime bans as FA investigate Manchester United missile incident

Leeds United are currently the subject of an FA probe after an incident in which a projectile was thrown at Manchester United players during the Whites' derby defeat on Sunday February 20.

The object in question struck Man United winger Anthony Elanga during the Red Devils' goal celebrations in the 70th minute.

Consequently, the 19-year-old required brief medical attention from the visiting physio. As reported by The Times, Leeds United vows to issue lifetime bans to any supporters identified throwing missiles during games.

This is an attempt to curb repeated incidents involving projectiles being directed at opposition players during fixtures at Elland Road. Last month, Burnley player Matthew Lowton was struck by a bottle thrown from the Revie Stand.

West Yorkshire Police confirm they arrested nine individuals for offences including missile throwing inside Elland Road, while 70 ticketless away supporters were issued with dispersal orders after arriving in Leeds, as authorities attempted to quell any potential fixture-related incidents.

"Elanga looked well and he was happy about scoring his goal. Obviously things like that should not happen and I think even more so this game. The atmosphere was great," said interim Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick during his post-match press conference.

"Any excess other than sporting should not be approved," Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa said on the matter.

"I can't evaluate what you spoke about because I didn't see it."

Leeds United Chief Executive Angus Kinnear had urged supporters in his pre-match programme notes to represent the club positively despite the historic animosity between both teams and the period of time since a fixture of that magnitude had been played in front of supporters at Elland Road.

“While the hostility of Elland Road is a definite competitive advantage we would all encourage, let’s not mistake it for unsavoury and illegal behaviour that could mar our reputation and it is not befitting of our great club or city," he wrote.

Leeds United are expected to co-operate fully with the Football Association during their investigation.

A spokesperson for the club said, as per The Times: "Leeds United are reviewing CCTV footage and we will do everything possible to find those supporters who are throwing objects onto the field of play. Any supporter caught throwing objects on to the pitch will be issued a lifetime ban from attending our fixtures.”

Incidents of a similar nature have seen charges issued by the FA to offending clubs.

Leeds have this morning released a statement on a separate issue regarding the concussion protocols followed by medical staff at Elland Road after Robin Koch was withdrawn prematurely with a head injury.
