Leeds United vice-chairman Paraag Marathe sends special message to star

Tyler Adams has been congratulated by Leeds United vice-chairman Paraag Marathe, following the announcement he will captain the USMNT at the World Cup. US boss Coach Gregg Berhalter is reported to have left the decision in the hands of his players, allowing them to all vote individually, with Adams then chosen to wear the armband in the Middle East.

Beginning their Group B campaign with a clash against Wales at the Al Rayyan Stadium, Marathe took time to congratulate the 23-year-old on his latest achievement.

Marathe said: "On behalf of all the Board of Directors at Leeds United, but especially those of us over in the US, we want to congratulate Tyler Adams on being named Captain of the USMNT for the 2022 World Cup.

"Serving as captain of any national team at any time and in any place, is a magnificent achievement and great privilege, but to wear the armband on the biggest stage is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"Tyler’s leadership and presence at Leeds since arriving here this summer have proven how much of a positive influence he is on and off the field for the team, and I have no doubt he will live up to expectations and do us proud throughout this World Cup.

"Good luck Tyler, we can’t wait to see what you do on the world stage."

After being named captain, Adams attended the USMNT press conference, stating his delight at the news. He told ESPN: "It's a huge honour for me, obviously, to be named captain of this team. A very young team, but a lot of credit to my teammates because anyone throughout our leadership council can wear that arm band and represent us with pride and represent us in the right way."
