Leeds United 'turned down' by Real Madrid legend Raul after sacking Jesse Marsch

Leeds United have been turned down by Real Madrid icon Raul as they kick off their search for Jesse Marsch ’s long-term replacement.

The struggling Yorkshire outfit sacked the American on Monday following a horrendous run of form since the World Cup. A haul of just 11 points from the last 51 on offer in the Premier League saw Marsch jettisoned with the club now actively looking for his replacement.

According to Spanish outlet AS, iconic former Spain striker Raul was approached regarding the prospect of taking the reins at Elland Road. However, he is reported to have turned down the move as he wants to finish the season in charge of Real Madrid Castilla.

Raul is currently attempting to mastermind promotion for Real Madrid's reserve side to the second tier of Spanish football. He has been in charge of the team since 2019 and has spent his entire coaching career with the club he played for.

Meanwhile, it is also suggested that he has ambitions of eventually replacing current boss Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Italian has 18 months left on his deal in Madrid but appears to be under increasing pressure due to Los Blancos’ miserable title defence this term.

Raul enjoyed a long and successful playing career with Real Madrid as he scored 323 goals in 741 matches in all competitions - helping the club to six league titles, three Champions League crowns and a host of other trophies. He continued his goalscoring form with Schalke, Al Sadd and New York Cosmos before retiring in 2015.

He now forces Leeds to look elsewhere in their search for another permanent head coach. West Brom boss Carlos Corberan could potentially be in line for a return to Elland Road after impressing since taking control in the Midlands.

Elsewhere, Rayo Vallecano coach Andoni Iraola is also reportedly among the contenders to be appointed. In the time being, Michael Skubala, Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas are set to take control of training whilst the search for Marsch’s successor continues and will lead the side as they take on fierce rivals Manchester United on Wednesday.

A club statement confirming the sacking of Marsch on Monday read: “Leeds United can confirm head coach Jesse Marsch has been relieved of his duties. Jesse joined the club in February 2022 and was instrumental in keeping the club in the Premier League on the final day of last season.

“Rene Maric, Cameron Toshack and Pierre Barrieu will also leave the club. We would like to thank Jesse and his backroom staff for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

“The process of appointing a new head coach is underway and we will continue to keep supporters up to date throughout the coming days.”
