Leeds United told they need to 'spend serious amount of money' if they stay up

TalkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend has claimed Leeds United would have to spend a ‘serious amount of money’ if they are to survive this season. The Whites are battling alongside Burnley and Everton to secure their Premier League safety, with Leeds moving out of the bottom three on Sunday thanks to a last gasp draw with Brighton.

However, both Burnley and Everton have games in hand over Leeds this week, with the former making the trip to Aston Villa and the latter hosting Crystal Palace. Those results will dictate which sides have destiny in their own hands ahead of the final day on Sunday.

Leeds have struggled massively with squad depth over the course of this season, with injuries having played a major role in their disappointing campaign. Only two new players were brought in during the summer window, which has sparked frustration towards the board in recent weeks.

And speaking to talkSPORT, former Chelsea defender Townsend believes that out of the three sides battling the drop, Leeds would be the team that requires the most investment if they stay up.

He said: “If Burnley survive, they’re not going to go crazy, they never do. They’ll probably go top of the Championship, maybe look at one or two of the teams in the Premier League where boys aren’t playing, that they might be able to find a slot for one or two just to thicken their squad up.

“I would think out of the two, Leeds and Everton, Leeds are a team to me that look like they’re going to have to spend a serious amount of money.”
