Leeds United told Jesse Marsch sacking was 'terrible' timing amid progression claim

Shaun Wright-Phillips believes Jesse Marsch was close to executing his ideal style of play at Leeds United, and that is was a 'terrible' time to sack him.

Marsch was relieved of his duties by Leeds on Monday following a run of seven league games without a win. The Whites had collected just two wins from their last 17 games in the Premier League, and were only separated by the relegation zone on goal difference.

But Leeds' search for a manager has not quite gone to plan. Carlos Corberan has penned a new long-term deal at West Brom, while Arne Slot has announced that he'll be staying at Feyenoord.

Rayo Vallecano have also blocked Leeds' approach for Andoni Iraola as their search for Marsch's successor rumbles on.

Former Chelsea and Manchester City winger Wright-Phillips has weighed in with his view on the topic, and having played under Marsch at New York Red Bulls, argues that the American was close to making things click at Elland Road.

"I quite like watching Leeds," Wright-Phillips told The Friday Football Social on BBC 5 Live. "I think the game that they played against Man United was so entertaining. It was one of the best games I've seen in the Premier League this season.

"The caretaker manager came out and said he's not changed anything from the way Jesse Marsch would've played. I've been with Jesse at Red Bulls and I've watched him through his career, and I know he's always played quite narrow.

"But with Gnonto in the team, I don't think he played as narrow as he would've liked because Gnonto is a winger that tends to hug the line a lot. He wants to get defenders one-on-one as we've seen him terrorising everybody this year.

"He was just starting to get the players that he wanted to make the pitch bigger and it was just a bad time to sack him. It was a terrible time."
